Frequently asked questions

Component or Full URL — which should I use?

Use Component for a value you are putting inside a URL, such as a search term. Use Full URL when encoding an entire address, so characters like / ? and & keep their meaning.

What does “+ for spaces” mean?

HTML forms encode spaces as + instead of %20. Turn this on when working with form data or some query strings.

Is URL Encode & Decode free?

Yes. URL Encode & Decode is free to use with no sign-up and no watermark.

Are my files uploaded to your server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device, which also makes it fast and private.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. Very large files may be slow on older phones.
